September 15, 2015: Halifax Waterfront to Host First Outdoor Sculpture Event

Sculpture Nova Scotia Welcomes Artists to Sculpt in the Open Air from September 19 to October 17 Halifax, September 15, 2015: Sculpture Nova Scotia will launch its inaugural symposium on September 19, kick-starting a public creation process that will result in a permanent collection of outdoor granite sculptures. The symposium will last four weeks, with the finished sculptures to be highlighted at Nocturne Art at Night on October 17.

Sculpture Nova Scotia (SNS) is a partnership with Waterfront Development. The event will host experienced artists-in-residence for mentoring local artists in granite sculpture practice. The symposium will take place at Salter on the Halifax Waterfront, near the Boardwalk. Public hours are 9 to 5 daily, Monday through Saturday. The public is invited to observe during opening hours, and a community event schedule is on the SNS website. A free Family Sunday of Sculpture is being offered in partnership with AGNS on September 27 from 1 pm to 4 pm. A free public lecture is scheduled for October 1 at 7 pm at the AGNS.

“It’s a demonstration, so people can experience the making of large-scale granite sculptures from idea to finished product,” says Pamela Scott Crace, one of the volunteer organizers. “We’re excited for Nova Scotia to be joining the sculpture symposium movement. It will connect citizens to public art in a new way.”

The symposium will highlight the talents of Maine-based sculptor Mark Herrington, Greek-Canadian sculptor Vasilis Vasili, and NSCAD MFA-candidate and intermedia artist Angela Henderson. The artist-interns are Miro Davis, Kimberly Watson, and Marc Graff. The entire team will be supported by artistic site manager Julie Glaspy, who interned at Sculpture Saint John in 2014.

“Around the world, people are excited about place making, using public spaces as stages for gathering and cultural expression,” says Colin MacLean, President & CEO of Waterfront Development. “Through partnerships with the private sector, our goal is to create a platform where our community can be creative and big ideas can flourish.
